One-stop dispensing and re-use of patients own drugs effectively work together in a safe, effective and efficient way to support the patient and reduce waste. One-stop dispensing refers to the practice of combining inpatient and discharge dispensing into a single 28-day supply, which means they can be taken home with the patient to avoid waste once they have been discharged. Similarly inpatients can bring to the hospital the medicines they have already been using at home – although can only be used once they have passed an assessment done by the hospital pharmacy staff.
